S. Nicoló

An idyllic village in the west of Caldaro

The locality of S. Nicoló is situated at the west end of Caldaro, directly at the foot of the Mendola mountain. Embedded in a landscape which is covered by grape-vines, this small village is captivating thanks to its beauty and fairytale-like character. Idyllic tranquility is one of the main characteristics of the locality. The main activity of the population of S. Nicoló was and is still the agriculture.

Particularly for families this village represents an ideal place to spend comfortable holidays. Of course it is also possible to make various hikes starting from this S. Nicoló.

S. Nicolò, however, is also a venue of various special events. Particularly Christmas time is quite eventful, as on December 6, there is the S. Nicolò fair, a real folk festival both for adults and children. Also on December 5, a traditional event takes place. This day is "devil's day" and a traditional parade as well as a folk festival under the linden trees in the Brunnerstraße Road. Enjoy hot beverages, pizza and cakes! And due to the fact the the "devils" are quite tame and sometimes even remove their masks, also children really love this event.

As the entrance of the village indicates, S. Nicolò is a place of pilgrimage. A picture of Holy Mother of God has been worshiped since March 14, 1733 when the painting began to "sweat". Those who witnessed the happenings reckoned it as tears.

Whitsun is a devotional time in S. Nicolò, as there are more prayers than in the rest of the year and this period of time is quite contemplative.

Every five years at Whitsun S. Nicolò becomes Saeculum. The painting of Mary is whorshiped and carried through the village, choir and other associations accompany the procession. Months of preparatory works bind together those who participate and stimualtes the village community. In these days the church is richly decorated and of course after the ceremony there is a get-together.

By the way: the second church spire with a green roof has been built because the first toll made the church tower disbalance and crash.
