About 20 different types of grapes are cultivated throughout South Tyrol. Many farmers still cultivate old types, whereas younger farmers also try to plant some new types of gapes. Their courage is rewarded. New, good wines are very popular with connoisseurs.
The quality and processing of grapes and later on of the wines is surveyed. Most of the vine growing areas are subject to safeguarding provisions and use the seal of approval D.O.C. ("Denominazione di Origine Controllata"), which means Controlled Denomination of Origin.

The white wines are always to the fore. Their fresh, dry or mild taste is very popular wines and many people have a marked preference for light white or golden wines...
However, also red wines are very popular due to their heavy and strong character, but not everyone likes the earthy taste. However, also the light "Schiava" wines proved popular with gourmets.
