From the beginning the grapes in South Tyrol have had the best prerequisits for riping. The style of cultivation, however, has not only changed in Appiano and Caldaro. Wine producers started not to concentrate any longer on quantity. The times when the one-litre-bottles of the autochtonous “Schiava” were exported to foreign countries are over. The owners of wineries recognised that quality is much more appreciated than quantity. Moreover also the consumers’ behaviour is given to this trend, as they also wished for more diversity in price and service. In the Oltradige owners of wineries started to cultivate less “Schiava” and more differred and white types of wine like “Sauvignon”, “Weißburgunder”, “Gewürztraminer”. Also Kerner, Müller Thurgau and Veltriner became well-liked.
The world of wines in South Tyrol experienced a reorietation and still is looking for its role. Many awards confirm, however, that the path of the wine growing region is the right one. In other words South Tyrol and different wineries from Appiano and Caldaro are among the best wine growing areas in 2008.
In the last years Appiano and Caldaro came to be wine growing localities which knew how to maintain their reputation. There are also a large number of events which underline the importance of the delicious wines of the region. The “San Paolo Wine Weeks” have got a long tradition and casts a spell over visitors from all over.
The wine and nature trail “Hoher Weg Gschleier” in Cornaiano and the South Tyrolean wine museum in Caldaro testify the noticable importance of Caldaro and Appiano in the world of wines.
