The last inter-ice age brought about an erosion of the Adige and thus a valley formation, but the surrounding of Appiano has not been changed. For this reason, many geological traces from the past can be found in this area.
During the last ice age, one of the glacier tongues covered Appiano and Caldaro.
Nowadays there are numerous traces left from this period of time, for example moraines or special forms of porphyry. In Appiano, there are for instance the popular ice holes that testify the developments of those ancient times.
