The most beautiful places

Must-sees in Appiano

Some of the localities testify that Appiano has already been populated in the stone age. These traces transform some places in the village into mystical sites that convey a very special feeling. The list of interesting constuctions and sites that are worth to be visited is nearly inexhaustible: Appiano Castle, Ganda Castle, Freudenstein Castlel, Boymont Castle, Corba Castle, the hamlet Pigenò, the S. Appolonia Church, Warth Castle...

Another curiosity: in the chapel of Appiano Castle you can find romanesque frescos on which the traditional South Tyrolean dumplings are illustrated for the first time.

Also the forest of Monticolo is a very popular attraction. Moreover the two lakes, which are surrounded by this forest, are the deepest lakes in South Tyrol with 25 metres. The same as Lake Caldaro, they belong to the warmest bathing lakes in the Alps.

From the geological point of view, Appiano is a rest of a valley floor which during the inter-ice age was not involved in the erosion of the Adige. Various phenomenons still refer to ancient times, as for instance the "devil chiars", one of several natural monuments. Also the ice holes are one of these special phenomenons, described in another article.

The snowdrops, liverleaves and primroses in spring valley are blossoming very early in spring. Come and visit the spring valley in March...

By now the MMM is well known to everyone. The Messner Mountain Museum is the biggest of five mountain museums, established according to the alpinist and adventurer Reinhold Messner. This mountain museum has been integrated into the Firmiano Castle in the North of Appiano and is a recommendable destination for a day trip.
